Shed sizes and typical prices in the UK
How big a shed do you need, and what should it cost? This page gives common sizes and estimated price ranges for November 2026.
Common sizes
UK sheds are still often sold in feet, with a metric equivalent. Width is usually given first, then depth. Sizes are nominal; real dimensions can be a little different, and roof overhang adds to the footprint, so check the supplier's footprint figure before you measure your space.
| Size (ft) | Approx. metres | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 6 x 4 | 1.8 x 1.2 | Hand tools, bikes (one or two), small mower |
| 7 x 5 | 2.1 x 1.5 | Tools, bikes, small equipment |
| 8 x 6 | 2.4 x 1.8 | General garden storage, a small bench |
| 10 x 8 | 3.0 x 2.4 | Workshop, larger mower, family storage |
| 12 x 8 | 3.7 x 2.4 | Workshop with workbench, hobby space |
| 16 x 10 and up | 4.9 x 3.0 | Large workshop, garden room, office |
Choosing a size
- List what you need to store and measure the biggest item.
- Allow space to walk in and reach things. Most people regret going too small.
- Check the door opening width, not only the shed width.
- Check the headroom if you will stand and work inside.
- Leave a gap around the outside for air and maintenance. Many suppliers advise about 50 cm so you can treat and repair the walls.
Your base should be slightly larger than the shed: the Summerhouse24 guide suggests roughly 5 to 10 cm extra each side. See bases.

What affects the price
- Size and roof: bigger and more complex costs more.
- Cladding: overlap is cheapest, then shiplap, then tongue and groove. See cladding.
- Timber thickness and treatment.
- Extras: windows, double doors, shelving, felt or shingle roof, locks.
- Installation: many suppliers offer fitting for an extra charge.
- Base: one guide puts bases from about £30 to £450 depending on the type.
Don't forget the running costs
Timber treatment every year or two, roof felt replacement over time and security upgrades all add up. See maintenance.
